Design Approach
The Savoy project involved the renovation of two historically significant downtown Oakland hotels,
the Jefferson and Oaks built in 1912 and 1920. This renovation created 101 studio units that provide permanent housing for the homeless with special priority given to the former SRO hotel tenants.
This exciting project involved façade restoration, a new shared lobby between the two buildings
and seismic retrofitting. The Oaks was reconfigured to provide studio units with kitchens and baths
for each resident. Both buildings have storefront retail at the ground floor making the project a
vibrant part of the downtown commercial district.
